  Video Capture Size

  I am capturing video with Premier Pro 1.5. My first few captures were set at pretty high quality and and a larger picture size. The files are very large. I am only using the video to back up DV tapes. I plan to edit and then make some DVD for home use. How high should I set my quality and how large should I make the picture size. Currently, my 1 hour of video is around 12MB.

  DV video is 25 Megabits per second, or about 3.1 MegaBytes per second. The files will be large– this is the nature of digital video.
  If you do a direct capture of DV (which is what you should be doing…), one hour will take up about 11.25 GB of storage.

  I purchased a 500GB external drive thinking I would have plenty of storage. I will be limited by the time I get all my old footage captured. Suggestions on ways to back up the back ups so they don’t take up so much space? Or once I’ve done my edits, a way to store the footage to another media?
