    Don’t understand this one.

I had a friend with a Mac who wanted to edit some footage I shot. I exported (made movie)a QT MOV file using DV DVCPro NTSC codec at 720×480. He got it and said it 640×486.

I looked at it in CS3 PP and the properties said it was 720×480.

I looked at it in QT player and propterties said it was 640×486, as did Avid Liquid.

Go figure. Is it an anomolie in PP3 ?

720×480 is the real pixel frame size. The other apps are taking the down res of the height aspect ratio (0.889 AKA:0.9) and telling you what it will screen as (640×480). This is the size that PPro works in too, but it tells you the real frame size and then the aspect ratio to work off.
There is nothing wrong with PPro. It’s pretty weak that the other apps aren’t telling you what the real frame size is….

You may well be right, but I think there is more to it than that – basically because it is both FCP and Avid Liquid that are interpreting the file as 640×486 – not 720×480 – and they are requiring the video to be rendered.

I don’t know enough about it to really know one way or the other – but you would think programs like FCP, PP3 and Avid Liquid would be pretty good at getting the properties right.

Without seeing it for myself. I’d say the file needs rendering because it’s not a native codec for the apps.
FCP for example needs a Mac rendered QT file. A PC rendered QT file won’t always come up properly. I would use the standard DV NTSC codec not the DVCPro version. There is something in that codec that isn’t being recognised natively.
