How to render a smaller file for youtube?

I’m a new user with Premiere, really just learning the basics.

I edited a 10 second clip from my digital camera, rendered it. It plays fine, but it’s over 200mb!

How do I render a video in a smaller size to be able to put on youtube or something?

Question #2: Audio
My friend showed me that you need to switch the audio track to “write,” then actually manually fade it down as it’s playing! This to me is insane.
There must be some way to select a bit of audio and click “mute,” or drag an audio track to just past the end of the video, and click “fade out,” no?

I can’t imagine having to do this manual nonsense and “try to get it right where you want it, as the audio is playing over the video.”

You don’t say what version you’re using, but either way,
my recommendation is to subscribe to Lynda.com.
It’s only $25/mo. and they have some great tutorials on Premiere. Premiere is a bit complicated.

Also Wrigley Video has some great free tutorials:

The new CS3 version has an export to YouTube format as a Preset, which makes it very easy.

where do i find the export to youtube setting?

is premiere more trouble than it’s worth for basic editing purposes?

Here’s are the specifics.

Click on the Timeline so you know it’s chosen

From the menus choose:

File
Export
Adobe Media Encoder
Format – click on the arrow and choose h.264
Preset – click on the arrow and choose Youtube
then ok.

I’d spend the time to learn Premiere, it gives you lots
of options. Also search on YouTube for training videos.

No way is Prem more trouble than it’s worth for basic editing! You’ll edit a lot faster than on cheaper programmes once you get used to it. As for fading out audio, click on the effects panel, audio transitions, crossfade and then drag constant power onto your clip in the timeline.

I have found the CS 3 H.264 YouTube setting to create inferior videos. Instead I used h.264 DV and it produced a really nice looking file, and when uploaded to YouTube it looks pretty nice (for YouTube of course)

all this info has been great.

i do agree that the youtube setting produces a pretty crappy looking video.

also, i had discovered how to fade the audio in and out.

i’m loving this program.

thank you all for the help.

oh, one more question.

the clip playback inside the program is a bit skippy.
i only hvae 512mb RAM. if i upgrade to add 2more gigs, would that make a big difference in smoothness?

Your clip looks great, I wish I could acheive the same. Can you tell me how you set up H264DV in CS3? I can set H264 in the Adobe Media Encoder but how do you set DV?

i don’t see any h264 “dv” setting.

For some reason when I do the following:

From the menus choose:

File
Export
Adobe Media Encoder
Format – click on the arrow and choose h.264
Preset – click on the arrow and choose Youtube
then ok.

I DON’T HAVE h.264 as a choice under Format.

I have ONLY the following four choices:

Adobe Flash Video
QuickTime
Real Media
Windows Media

I am running Pro CS3. Version 3.0.0 (374)

What do I need to do to get my videos onto YouTube???
