  • Auto Contrast — goes nuts on fade to black

    CS3. PPRO V3.1.1

Have a clip that lost amplitude during capture.

Clip is 1 hour 13 min program, with a couple fade to blacks built in.
Applied Auto Contrast to clip. Before render all looked fine in fade to black areas.
After render, the fade to black areas were blown out, almost looking like open tape from a Quad (I’m dating myself).

Work around: Add new black and fades after the fact. Fortunately, there was a nice pause before audio started…

My first time using this effect…. Be Aware!!!

    Happy Holidays, All!

Well, it kept finding places where it would mistake a dark scene for black… Eventually gave up on Auto Contrast….

    Auto Levels same thing….

Trying Proc controls now. That seems to work…

    Oh Well!!!

Looks like this thread should be re-named to:

Unfortunately, auto controls are mostly useless in video.

Somehow I don’t understand why that should be…..

By that I mean, what would you use the Auto Contrast, or Auto Levels on, audio??? :)!
    Anyway the proc controls worked.

Well, it can work on some footage where scenes are well defined, and levels aren’t all over the place. By work, I mean about as well as an auto white balance works on a camera …

These are really not quality plugins either since very few people actually use them. I guess Adobe kind of left them there with no updates.

Yes Procamp is a good option. 3 way color correction can be of good help as well.

It acts more like a Trap!

It’s my contention, that an effect should look identical before and after a render.

In this case, the Silhouettes and fades do not show a push to white until After the render. This is a big trap waiting to spring on an un-suspecting user.

In my case, a 70 minute program was transferred with slightly low video, due to no scopes in capture (another sore point with me that I’ve commented about for a long, long time!).

If you release an effect that will make black — white after a render — at least have the effect do this when dropped on the clip, instead of improving the overall video, but neglecting to show you the areas that will be rendered un-useable after rendering!!!
