I have just acquired a new Video Camera that saves clips onto an SD card.
Can I import them into Premiere Pro the same way I used to import clips from the cassette tapes on my Sony Digital Video Camera Recorder [Mini].
I would prefer to use that program rather than the one that came with the Panasonic.

You should be able to import by transfering from your SD card. The problem is that Premiere doesn’t play well with consumer formats. Not sure what format this camcorder records to, but usually Premiere Elements is more suited for those.

This is an AVCHD camera which is not supported in PP. Either buy another camera or use another NLE application that supports AVCHD.

    Thanks for your useful response!
Can you suggest a suitable program [NLE]that would support AVCHD? I would be most grateful.

Final Cut Express 4, Sony Vegas 7, Ulead VideoStudio 11, Avid Xpress Pro, Canopus EDIUS Pro 4.5

Check Panasonic’s website, they have a free program that will convert the avchd footage to DVCPRO HD.

If only life were that simple?
I have tried looking on the Panasonic website for the UK and the global one and entered the phrase
“program that will convert the avchd footage to DVCPRO HD.” and came up with no results! I then tried entering the model number and also came up with ‘no results’.
Apparently they do not even know what product they are selling?
    How bizarre is that.
I guess my search techniques need some refining?
    Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the link…. sadly I did try to download the program from this site, I was forwarded on to enter my details etc.
I then received a name and password which I entered into the link that was sent to me and clicked on ‘accept usage details’ I clicked on ‘download’ and nothing happened….except my browser disappeared.
When I went to open it, I found I was just ‘restoring’ the session.
support@mainconcept.com refuses to give any support as they have an agreements with but Panasonic but refers me to them. Any other options?

I just tried it, and it worked fine. Your “new session” comment tells me that you are probably using Firefox. Try using Internet Explorer instead (I know…) If that doesn’t work I guess I could email you the software after I download it.

I use a AVCHD camera and convert the files to the Cineform CODEC before editing. This format works awesome in Premiere Pro!

Unfortunetly, the Cineform Aspect CODEC software costs $500. I think that its worth it even if Premiere supported AVCHD because its a lot easier to edit with and you lose almost no quality.

Here is a link where, if you also read the http://www.hv20.com forums, you can get a discount on the the software.

    Save $100 on Aspect!

Another thing that I do is to capture with a BlackMagic Intensity Card via the HDMI cable. This converts the video from AVCHD to MJPEG. MJPEG is not quite as good as Cineform in my opinion, but it still looks really great. MJPEG is easier to edit with than AVCHD, so I would use this capture process even if I had an NLE that supported AVCHD. Also the BlackMagic Intensity card only costs $250.
