I am using aftereffects 6 and do not own premiere, which seems like the preferred way to import dv files (as opposed to quicktime files) into aftereffects. I know there is a plug-in that allows for direct import; short of that, is there any other way?

You should be able to import AVI files into AE without any problems. No need for a special program.

There shouldn’t be a big problem when importing, you just have to make sure that your file is interpreted correctly by AE with lower field first and the right pixel aspect ratio

You can import digital files from disk into AE, but not from tape.

For that you need a non-linear editor such as Premiere, or a utility such as Windows Movie Maker, if I recall correctly. (or iMovie on Mac)
