Digital Anarchy’s 3D Assistants Lite in AE7?
Posted by Ray on March 1, 2006 at 10:16 pmI am making lots of cubes and boxes in AE 7. I hear that in AE 6.5 Digital Anarchy’s 3D Assistants Lite were included for free. Anything similar, and free, for AE 7?

March 2, 2006 at 6:17 amHey,
I wrote a script a while back for making 3d cubes in AE, you could simply replace the 6 sides with pictures and you’ll be ready to go. There is a single null object that you can animate; the script uses expressions to keep the 6 sides locked together so your box will never fall apart.

March 2, 2006 at 3:32 pmHey man, thank you for the script. Unfortunately, it does not appear to work with AE7. I get an error:
“Unable to execute script at line 26. undefined is not an object”

March 2, 2006 at 11:57 pmHey,
Thanks for the heads up, I wrote that for 6.5, I believe that there were a few scripting changes in 7.0, I’ll go over it tonight and update it.
Take care,

March 3, 2006 at 1:53 amHey,
It seems to work in my copy of AE7.0 Professional (PC). Try this:
1. Run AE7.0
2. Create a new comp (something like 720×540 will do)
3. Go to File>Scripts>Run Script File
4. Browse to wherever 3d_cube.jsx is on your computer, select it and open it.
5. A dialogue will pop up asking howe big you want each side to be…put in something like 100. Hit Enter.
6. An alert will pop up saying “done!” and an orange cube will appear in the upper left side of your comp window, with 6 solids and a null object in the project window.Maybe you don’t have the Professional version? Maybe running on a Mac? If you’re running on a Mac, maybe I need to test the script and make changes to it (don’t know if there is a difference between Mac and PC scripts),
Take care,
Nick

March 3, 2006 at 3:30 pmThanks for your help! You are right, if I follow your directions exactly, then your script works. However, it appears that is the only way to get it to work (a brand new, blank project). If there is anything in the project window other than Comp 1, then the script will not work. For example, after getting it to work with Comp 1, I made another blank comp and tried again. I get the “done!” message, but nothing is created. If I have any footage items in the project window at all, then I recieve the “Unable to execute script at line 26. undefined is not an object” error message, even though I am running the script with a blank comp selected.
I know that there were scripting changes made in AE7 that causes problems with earlier scripts. I am using AE7 Professional on a PC.
