  Does using 16 bits help to get clean mattes?

  I am having trouble pulling clean green screen mattes, with jaggies spoiling the matte edges even using a lot of Mstte Choker. Then I tried changing Project Settings to 16 bit and instantly I seemed to get smoother matte edges. However using 16 bit I cannot output either to an AVI file or my prefered option of a TIFF Image Sequence. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
