Is there any hidden option or way to feather the edges of a Garbage Matte?

Basically I’m trying to apply some color correction to one area of an image, and the secondary color correct option really won’t key out what I need to hit. What I’d like to do is just duplicate the clip I’m working on underneath itself in the timeline, matte out what I want to adjust on the top one, and then correct the duplicate, so the differently colored areas show through. Problem is that leaves a hard line in the image between the altered and the original area. Feather would fix it perfectly for what I need, but I can’t find anyway to do it. I’d prefer not to have to create a specifically placed traveling matte every time I just want to make the background a little darker, so if anyone knows an easier trick, I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

Design the garbage matte, then when you have it covering everything you want, copy it to a black clip on a new sequence on track two, putting it over a white matte on track one. Use that sequence as a track matte.

I forgot to mention that you blur the heck out of the garbage matter clip. And, it might work better if you just export it and use it as a matte to avoid a lot of rendering.
