  Capturing video for archival purposes

  I’ve got a MiniDV camcorder now and want to clear out the tapes. Simply because it’s getting expensive and I would like to store them on DVD. Most of which are just home movies and such. I wanted to store them and maybe edit them later in APP 2.0.
  However, if I try to put them as an .AVI on a DVD the files are much too large. Would it be much of a loss to convert them to Mpeg2 to store to DVD or would another format be better to edit later and less quality loss?

  Believe me, buy new tapes. Reusing tapes is a bad idea to start with, you will eventually get drop outs. Tape is extremely cheap nowadays. If we were talking HDCam tapes, maybe, but not DV.

  Mpeg2 compression will not be easily editable and will severely affect quality.

  and DVD’s have a very short longevity in comparison to tape.
