    Greetings everyone,
Can anyone point me in the direction of an online resource or otherwise offer me some information on bitrates for streaming video on a website. The web guy has only given me audio target bitrates and does not know. I need to ideally drop out 2 versions high and low res of a 28:30 show. The low res being 210 X 140…. I just need to know proven bitrates for DSL and dial up and any other hints would be great.

    Thank You for your input!

First of all, I would not use 210X140 because you want both numbers to be divisible by 8. And, a 1.5:1 ratio is a bit odd in the square pixel world. Sure 720X480 is 1.5 but the pixels are not square. Square them off and it becomes 720X534.

Therefore a 4:3 image of 192X144 works out pretty nicely. So does 224X168.

Now, for something larger in a higher quality, try 320X240 – that’s pretty normal for the web.

For the low resolution you must be dealing with dialup, and I would limit the entire stream to 36K or so. Even 56K modems are not really that high in practice.

As for DSL, you should be fine with 768K, but for safety, I would stick to 512K.

    CSUSB uses 42K and 300K.

There is a table on this page that you might find interesting: https://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/flv_live.html

Thank you as always for the insight into this new (4 me) medium. The 210 X 140 ratio was what the web guy coded on the site so I will have to get with him…… I appreciate the help and the link!
Another beautiful day in Central Florida, eh Mr. Gotz???

A very pleasant day, yes. Warm and breezy.

The reason for having both dimensions divisible by 8 has something to do with the way the encoders do their job. Better quality encodes come with the right dimensions.

Just explain that to him and he should be reasonable, I would think.
