I’ve had several folks (at school) ask me if I’d convert their Hi8/Digital8 tapes to DVD. I’m trying to figure out what’s a good price to charge for this. Obviously they can do it themselves, but being technology illiterate they’d rather have someone else do it and charge. So, if you do this, what’s your cost?

What do you need to make per hour to make it worth your while? If you need $10/hr then assume $20 per one hour tape – at a minimum. That only includes your actual time spent, not rendering or capturing. Also, I suggest that you find a program that captures directly to MPEG2 so you skip a couple of steps.

In fact, if you have a lot of these to do, invest in a DVD recorder that has composite inputs.

I can’t go directly from camera to burner since I’ll be creating menus in Encore prior to burning the disc. And there will also be some editing/cutting before the final video is burned, so I plan on capturing in PPro first, edit, then export and head on over into Encore.

To give you an idea, I usually charge about $80.00 for 1 hour DV or Digibeta tape, and that’s without menus.

But the best thing you can do in this case, is call duplication houses in your area and see what they charge so that you remain competitive.

When folks are given a choice between a direct copy via a DVD burner for $20 or an edited version with menu for $300-400, they almost always go for the duplicate.
