I want to export a clip from avid to take in to AE to composite a title and transfer mode over.

what should i export the clip from avid as (settings), and what should i export the composited clip from AE as (settings)?

this is more than just adding text over an image, otherwise i would just render the text wtih an alpha and place it over the clip in avid.

A least destructive way to do this would be to export your title animation from AE with an alpha channel, and layer this above your video in Avid. You could pre-render a thumbnail in Avid to use as a guide in AE, and then remove that layer before you export.

    I just re-read your post.

If you cant just import the title, then I would export from avid using a lossless codec (huffy, PNG 100%, etc) and import into AE. Make sure your comp is set to match the Avid projects settings (progressive/interlaced, frame rate. etc) Create your animation and then Export from AE using the same lossless codec, and once again making sure the output module matches your Avid timeline settings.

I personally export out of DS using Quicktime (animation codec at 100% Millions of Colors). But I set the video levels to ‘graphics’ because Animation is an RGB codec. Bring this into AE (Which is native RGB). Then export with the same settings back to the QT. Make sure when you capture it the settings are still ‘graphics’ so that it properly converts the RGB back to YUV.

If the RGB, YUV settings get off somewhere, your levels will shift and you’ll get a dark image or a brighter image than it should be.

Sorry if these settings don’t apply to MC, I only know DS and assume they are similar.

We have two Adrenalines here at Media Loft, and we do a ton of the compositing you are talking about. Our adrenalines are on G5s and I use two HP XW8200’s with AE6.5 pro on both. I have the Avid codecs on my PCs and we trade clips everyday with great results using those codecs. We use 2to1 compression for some things, uncompressed with others. I like compositing with the video and then giving the finished clip back to the Avids because it allows for more polished composites. I just think it looks less “supered”. If we need more edit session flexibility, then I’ll provide 32-bit QT’s with the Avid compression. You have to be careful about how your pieces are premultiplied in that case however.

    Hope this is helpful,
    Troy
