  Irregular processor max outs

  I’ve had Premiere Pro 2 running nicely on my 2.6Ghz P4 with 1GB of memory but I’m finding that the program has started maxing out my processor occasionally when I try to watch a sequence in the monitor. Sometimes I can scrub through the video and it all looks fine but then as soon as i hit play it just hangs. I know its not a hardware insufficiency as I’ve had it working fine before. I have shut down all non essential processes etc.

  Any ideas please?

  Any firewire gadgets attached other than DV out? Virus scan running?

  thanks for the response.

  No, I’ve only got the camera attached via firewire although to be fair I don’t need this attached when editing. I’ve killed all processes other than windows and premiere so I can be sure its not a virus scan or anything like that kicking in. I hadn’t thought about disconnecting all the usb devices though, might this help?

  What I can’t understand is why I can scrub through the timeline just fine and see the video and audio as it should be but then as soon as i press play it craps kittens.

  This sounds more like disk speed bottle neck to me. Particularly since it just popped up. Is the disk really fragmented?

  Shuttling is a different type of retrieval process than playback. i’d check out the media harddrive and maybe back it off to an external if there is anything valuable on it. If it isn’t fragmented, it simply may be getting ready to go to that big peripheral slot in the sky…

  Maybe check out the project playing from another harddrive to be sure??

  Don’t think its the disks…I’m running off a brand new, 400GB Seagate 7200rpm hard disk with a 16MB cache and I defrag almost daily. I tried removing all the peripheral usb/firewire devices and this seems to have solved the problem. It could just be a coincidence though. I’ll be back if it happens again! Thanks for the advice people
