  Quality decreases after exporting

  Hi,

  What I did:

  Step 1. I generated a 1024×576 quicktime video (square pixel) in “Processing” (www.processing.org). I chose this resolution because my final product is a PAL widescreen DVD which is 720×576 (pixel aspecto ratio 1.42).

  Step 2. I imported this quicktime video into a DV PAL widescreen project in Premiere and dropped it in a timeline. Since the pixel aspect ratio is corrected automatically, the 1024×576 video and the 720×576 canvas overlap and so there is no need for scaling.

  Step 3. I exported the timeline to a DV video. The result has a much lower quality than the original quicktime.

  Questions:

  a) What am I doing wrong?

  b) Basically my goal is to make a DVD with videos generated by “Processing”. I can choose whichever resolution I want for the generated videos. I need to use Premiere (or AE) because I want to blend several videos together. What is the best practice to accomplish this?

  Then don’t export to DV 😉 In fact never export to DV, unless you have to go to a DV tape. Just remember that DV compression is 5:1.

  Either export to Mpeg2 for DVD, or even better, export uncompressed and let you DVD encoder figure out the space requirements.
