  HDV and monitor resolution.

  Hi There,

  I’ve been working with HDV footage on my laptop, and the monitor is set at 1680 x 1050 (it goes up to 2048 x 1536). Anyway, I have no trouble with it but I am buying a desktop to keep up with the workload, and I’ve found a nice spec PC but the monitor doesn’t go up to 1440×1080. I can’t remember the monitor spec.

  What are the minimum requirements for the monitor then using / viewing HDV ? Or do I just have to splash out on a HD monitor or HD TV now ?

  I don’t think that there is a minimum requirement, but that resolution should work. If you don’t think that it is sufficient, I would recommend upgrading the video-card.

  I would work in your monitor’s native resolution. When working from home, I use a 1440×900 and even do work in true 1980i HD. The only draw back is that there are small details you may miss, especially if you work with keyed footage.

  Thanks guys, I work with a lot of keyed footage, about 90% of the time.

  Anyway, I bought the new PC today, I’ll set it up tomorrow, but not being as technical as I perhaps should be, I have to ask stupid questions.

  I figure if jo public are taking pics with 6 mega pixel cameras these days and displaying them on standard monitors I should be ok with HDV, even though I can’t appreciate it at full quality.
