I am capturing HDV footage (1440×1080, 60i) from a Canon XH A1. I am trying to export the footage as SD (720×480). When I choose ‘export movie’ Premiere Pro 2 gives me an avi file is substantially softer that the original footage or other SD footage shot with my SD camera (GL2) or shot with the HD camera in SD mode. It is to the point of looking out of focus and is not usable. I found a thread on another forum where a guy tested various NLEs and Premiere gave the same results in his test, scoring a 2 out of 10 for quality in the HD>SD down conversion.

Is anyone sucessfully using Premiere Pro 2 to downconvert HD footage? Is there a different method or codec that I can download or buy that will give better results?

    Thank you.

We ended up having to use an Image Pro which retails at about $6000, so that looks pretty good 😉

You might try importing your HDV project into a SD project, scale it down, and export. I found it to be more efficient. But keep in mind, you are losing pixels and the result is never going to be as nice as the original.

Yes, Steven, I found that bringing HD material into an SD project works much better than exporting as an AVI from an HD project. Do you know why? What is Premiere doing differently when it resizes inside a project as opposed to exporting? It appears that Premiere has the capability to do the down conversion well, just not using the export to avi from HD project.

    Thanks for your help.

I tried creating a new SD Sequence in my project and pasting in the content from my HD sequence, but all I got was a center crop of my HD content: it didn’t seem to scale. I’m new enough that I don’t know how to fix this.

    Any advice?
