What is the cleanest way to import a DVD into PP2? A client gave me a 16×9 program that I have to edit from and he can only provide me with a DVD! I would like to keep the 16×9 aspect ratio and the best possible picture quality from the DVD. I imported it component in from a DVD player using my Matrox LE breakout, but I lost the 16×9 aspect ratio, not to mention picture quality. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are importing material not suitable for editing, then you edit and then you need to recompress for export. The classic case of garbage in, (even worse) garbage out.

To avoid deteriorating quality any more than necessary, import into Encore and just razor the file. Editing is not feasible, IMO.

Your best option if you do have to do more advanced editing is to find one of those VOB or mpeg2 to uncompressed AVI converters (archives). Stay away from DV in the conversion process. Hopefully that won’t be seen through the lens of a projector.

DVD2AVI is a free solution that can convert VOB files to uncompressed AVI files (or any other non-DV avi codec).

Cinematize is a $60 application that can convert any VOB file to any Quicktime Codec.

Squared5.com has a free application that converts VOB files to any Quicktime codec (but requires the Quicktime MPEG-2 plugin).

Adobe Premiere Elements 2 and 3 will import VOB files from DVD directly into a project file. You can then export them out as anything you want.
