I’ll be using an HDV camera for an upcoming project but I won’t be editing it in HDV. Is there a better picture if I shoot it HDV then downconvert to DV to edit or should I just shoot DV from the get go.

HDV downconverted to DV doesn’t have any real advantage in image quality to shooting DV directly. Most would say that acquisition in HD of any kind, even for SD production, creates raw assets that will have some “shelf life” for future use.

Shooting HDV and editing uncompressed SD will make a difference in image quality over DV…but editing DV probably won’t make a better master DV product than shooting DV straight through.

I don’t see a reason NOT to shoot HDV though…having the “future proof” raw footage is a good selling point for clients.

Better? Perhaps, but not necessarily. I prefer to shoot HDV for a couple of reasons. You have to scale it down to make it fit, which means you can zoom all the way back up to 100% without quality loss. Which looks like you are zooming in. Comes in handy. The other issue is that you can get an HDV project later should you want to.
