  16:9 footage shown letterboxed and pillarboxed on 16:9 tv

  Hello everyone,

  I can’t seem to find an answer to this.

  I have 16:9 footage that I edited in a 16:9 project with Premiere Pro 1.5.

  Once transfered onto a DVD it is displayed letterboxed and pillarboxed on my 16:9 HDTV. Just like if the movie was shown in 4:3 and then with black bars on top and bottom, resulting in a black frame around the picture.

  The settings seemed okay when converting the footage and the 16:9 option is checked.

  When displayed on a 4:3 tv, the footage is okay with black bars on top and bottom only.

  Project resolution: 730×480
  Pixel aspect ratio: 1.2

  Any clue on this?

  How did you transfer it to DVD?
  Is your DVD player setup to display anamorphic video on your widescreen TV? (all players have a setup menu to configure video output).

  I transfered it to DVD using Adobe Premiere’s “Export to DVD” function and I also tried exporting it in .mv2 format to use it in a Adobe Encore project. It’s the same result in both cases.

  Settings: NTSC DV 16×9 high quality 7mb CBR 1 pass

  And for my DVD player, I didn’t find any setup menu but it plays anamorphic DVDs correctly.

  If you don’t have a mis-setting in your project some where it sounds like there could be letterboxing set on your DVD player, DVD player usually have Aspect settings, like “letterboxing, Pan and Scan, 16:9”, Different players have the functions under different titles on the remote, some have it under SETUP, some INFO , some DISPLAY, some just MENU.
  Have you tried to playback the DVD with DVD player software on your computer to see if it does the same thing?

  I plays fine on my DVD player, and I changed the settings of my DVD player from 4:3 letterbox to 16:9 Wide.

  Now the pictures is letterboxed and squished, but I have seen this problem on other threads.
