how to make a cut at current playhead location
I know this is probably a very stupid question but, what is the shortcut to make a cut at the current playhead location without having to go into the razor tool. Also, where is the found in the keyboard customization menu?

CTRL-K = Razor at CTI Position
Note Keyboard shortcuts are listed in the menu under customisation.

Beware that CTRL-K cuts everything, not just your selected clip but all the clips underneath it. Wish it would just cut the clip selected.

Does anyone know how to do this without cutting all tracks as mentioned in the previous post (and without using the razor tool)

Control K if you never change in customization. To un-cut underneath tracks, the only way I have found is locking the tracks. (look at a lock icon at extreme left of the timeline.
Remember you can custom-built the keyboard the better suit your workflow
Mine is: Z to make cuts, X to riple delete,C page down, D default video transition, Control D default audio xsition With left hand I can control this commands while with right move the mouse. Fast way to me! -
If you wanted to cut a section out of the footage, instead of razoring in two places and then deleting the footage and closing the gap, put in and out points (using I and O keys) and then to ripple delete out press the ‘ key (middle row, second one in from the enter, but depending on keyboard customisation it might be the one directly next to the enter on the middle row).
If you just want to lift the section out, do the in and out points and press the ; key (third one in from the enter on the middle row).
If there are multiple layers, it will just do the edit to the selected video and audio tracks, and not the other tracks.

I find the Shuttle Pro 2 as a handy tool. Makes shortcuts very simple. Your fingers do all the work without lifting your hand.

To select which tracks will be cut using Ctrl+K activate track targeting for the selected tracks. To do this click on the track name next to the lock icon for the specific tracks you want to cut.

Simply lock the layers you don’t want to be affected by the cut. It’s the lock icon, and locked layers will be grayed out with diagonal lines across them. ☺ Similar to Photoshop.
