  scratch disks – best arrangement

  Hi there everyone. I have two firewire external harddrive, and I’m using Ppro 2.0. I’m wondering what’s the best combination of where to put the
  1). captured AVIs
  2). previews
  3). conformed audio
  4). project files

  I’m thinking conformed audio should definitely be on a separate drive than captured AVIs and previews, since I’ve heard it’s a good idea to separate audio and video. But for captured AVIs and previews, since they’re both video, will it be fine to put them on the same drive? (but if I put previews with conformed audio, then that’s video+audio on the same drive, something to avoid, right?)

  Another related question is about daisy-chaining. If I daisy-chain the two drives, this means they’re running through the same channel to the same port on the computer, and they’ll be sharing the 400 mb/s (50 MB/s) bandwidth of firewire, right? So then is it much better to connect each drive to a separate 1394 port? (that way each drive gets 50 MB/s bandwidth)

  Well, to start with, I don’t think it’s a good idea to use external drives (Firewire or USB2) for anything else than capture.

  You are obviously not getting anywhere near the access speed you would be getting from an internal hardrive. I don’t have the specs in front of me but from what I remember it’s far off, whether you are on a Mac or on a PC. Worse I would assume on a PC since most users would use a PCI card for firewire. Firewire can also be CPU intensive, so you are cutting on speed there as well.

  Thanks for the suggestion. I neglected to mention that I have a laptop and can therefore only use external firewire drives. I have a very good setup with these 2 firewire drives, getting 40MB/s sustained read. But anyway, firewire is all that I have to work with. (so let’s discard this aspect in this discussion then)

  I would put 1 & 4 on one drive and 2 & 3 on another. That makes it easy to delete everything on the preview drive and start fresh for the next project.
