Anyone with a Canon XL2. Im thinking of buying, but want to see some footage shot on it.
Posted by Xavier De champs on December 15, 2005 at 9:01 pmHi anyone there with a couple of shots to show me how the XL2 video quality is? Im used to working with older Sony cameras in the 10.000 – 15.000 dollar range. When I say older I mean 3 – 5 years. How will this Canon camera compare to those? They have bigger CCD’s I guess, but anyone have any footage of the XL2? Shot in progressive mode, preferable.

December 15, 2005 at 11:19 pmGo over to the following link (DVX User)and you will find all sorts of discussion and info including screen grabs and clips shot with Panasonic DVX, Canon XL1 & 2 and Sony DV cameras.
There is also a side by side comparative test of these cameras if you look for it.
I am a DVX fan and user so I am biased that way but I did test them all myself before I purchased one.
Hope this helps (and the link works)

December 17, 2005 at 12:18 pmIve read loads of reviews lately, and Im starting to head towards the DVX100 now. Hmmm…. my only concern is the weight. Im used to bigger cameras, and having them on my shoulder. Bigger equals stable. The problem with cameras like the DVX is the is no shoulder support. But does it work for you? Do you get tired in the arms while for example making at handheld interview for 10 – 15 minutes?

December 17, 2005 at 4:46 pmI’ve shot extensively with both the XL2 and DVX100a. Overall the DVX is a better camera for my needs. It’s also an easier camera to travel with if you do much traveling. However, if you’re looking for a MiniDV camera, I would highly recommending purchasing the new Panasonic HVX200. Even if you just use it for a while for Mini DV (without P2 cards) you will have the option to go HD whenever you want.
The price point on the camera alone makes it a worthy purchase compared to the XL2.
If you want to see some DVX footage I’ve shot, go to https://www.nolongerifilms.com/quicklinks.html
Much of the footage in this reel was shot with the DVX100: https://www.nolongerifilms.com/reel.html

December 17, 2005 at 6:42 pmMy preference for the DVX ( and I assume the HVX when I can get my hands on one) is the image “look” that it produces. It is different to the Canon ands the Sony “looks. I am a film cameraman but I can really relate to the DVX image .
Functionally and practically I also preferred the DVX. Little things like the Manual Iris Control swayed me. I could not cope with the way this control was set up on theCanon for example with its delayed response. The wider lens also was a factor for the DVX.
Another factor is the sound quality from the DVX is superior according to many reports and reviews I have read.
Weight : All cameras get heavy in a hand held mode so no worry to me. I do a lot of hand held interviews. My camera is a bit heavier also because I have a full production mattebox set up on it.
The dvxusers forum has everything else you need to know to help you with your decision including samples and tests. Good luck.
