I’m trying to make a web clip for download on the internet. It needs to be Quicktime format. Total clip length is 1:46. I want to make a low bandwidth version and a high version. Any tips on best method — ie Encoder or export movie methods? There are so many option in both I am not sure what to use. Also, why do I need to specify ntsc or pal for a web clip? My footage is ntsc but it is going to be posted on a website in Switzerland — though I don’t think that should matter. So far I have tried Quicktime, with Sorenson and Sorenson 3, both 75% and 100% quality, with uncompressed audio. Each time there are hiccups in the audio. I tried the same with QDesign Music 2 audio compression. Sounded like it was in a tin can and the same hiccup was there. It is not on the source audio file. File size is really big too — 73 mb and 54 mb at the two different quality levels. I have found advice on the web and in books but most only go into detail about mpeg for dvd purposes. Great but now what I need. Any help out there?

Is your movie 1 hour or 1 minute long? Do you have Sorenson Professional codec installed on your system? (Installed with Squeeze)?

Hi — Movie is 1 min 48 sec. I don’t have the pro version — just sorenson and sorenson 3. After posting, I did get my hands on Cleaner 5 and managed to get some more acceptable results but still not as good as I would like. The highest QT encoding using Sorenson resulted in more qual loss than I had hoped. I did a low med and high version to accomodate different users. I expect the lower versions to lose qual but I really want the high version to be near the original if possible — assuming broadband connections can handle bigger files and longer downloads. I had no acceptable results using the PP Encoder or export to movie built-ins.

Have you tried Windows Media Encoder? There are hundreds of output options and it will take quite a few original file formats. I use this all the time for web conversions (but not QT ones, so perhaps this might not work…) Try it though

Thanks Victoria — I’ll look into that. 🙂 Thanks to Mike too. I’m not familiar with Squeeze?

Quicktime without Soreson Professional codec is much poorer than Windows media or Real.

Mike — Is the Sorenson Professional codec different than the Sorenson 3? I have 3 with Cleaner. I did look up Squeeze and it looks interesting. Maybe I’ll download a trial version and see what the difference is. Thanks for the info. 🙂

Yes the Professional version is different than the basic…you should be able to determine the version by clicking an “About” button at some point during the encoding options process.
