”Subtitled” Dialogue
I’m currently working on a short I made, but this is an idea that I would use often, so I hope there is an easy answer. I would like to add text, to the bottom of the screen, of what a character is saying…but only reveal the words as the person says it. So, each word appears only as it is being spoken. I was wondering if there was a way to do this, without creating titles for every word and fading in/out. Not that it’s alot of dialogue…just curious.

You can easily do that in After Effects by animating the text on a per word basis. In Premiere Pro, you would probably animate a crop.

Before you spend a lot of time generating your “word appears only as it is being spoken…, you might want to build it that way for a few scenes to test how it works with someone other than yourself. You might be demanding too much of the viewer using your method, especially if it’s important they follow and comprehend what’s being said.

Thanks, guys. While I’ve had many, many hours working with Premiere and Photoshop, and have a good understanding of Encore, I am a complete beginner with After Effects and Audition. I have a friend who knows AE well..so he’s going to be showing me around.
and as for the audience…I tried it out with simple titles in premiere, and it’s not too intense. If the audience can’t get it…it’s their loss 🙂
