  No Audio in “Export to Tape” (not just a “Play Audio on Audio Hardware” problem!)

  Hi all,
  I am trying to export a finished project from my ASUS laptop to my Sony DV camera via the “Export to Tape” command. If I have the playback setting: “Export to Tape” setting set to “Play audio on audio hardware”, the project exports to tape without problems, except there is no audio. However, when I change the setting to “Play audio on DV Hardware”, I click the ‘record’ button on the “export to tape” dialog and the status window reports “recording” but the current time code (in the export to tape dialog) stays at zero and nothing is recorded, video or audio. It doesn’t freeze as I can still press the “Stop” button (it tells me that recording was successful!). I read a post in the archives about something similar happening to a guy (also with an ASUS MoBo) who solved this same sort of problem by using a different Firewire port. Well, I just bought a PCMIA-card firewire port, disabled the built-in one, and I have the same problem! Anyways, I’m crazy frustrated and am hoping some of the gurus may have some insight.   Disconnect any other firewire devices. Camera in VTR mode? Is DV-IN enabled in cameras menu?
  Can you play Pro’s timeline out to your camera with audio? If yes, just initiate recoding manually from the camera.

  Thanks for your quick reply Mike. There are no other firewire devices. The camera is set up correctly for DV-in and VTR. However, I cannot play the timeline to my camera with audio… and here’s is the interesting part:

  my desktop computer (which is really old and slow) exports perfectly with the same version of Pro and the same camera (can play the timeline fine as well). My notebook, in the playback settings menu says “Using Direct3D” while the desktop does not (it is just blank). With Direct3D, it cannot do playback to DV and Desktop (video or audio). I disabled Direct3D by moving my video card’s (mobile Radeon x600) harware acceleration slider to zero. Now the playback setting says that its using Microsoft’s GDI. And now the timeline will playback to both DV and Desktop as long as the audio is coming out of the computer. So, still no audio on tape export or by just playing the timeline. I tried this on both the internal and PCMIA firewire ports.

  Two more interesting things before I pass the troubleshooting ball to your court again.

  1. If I disable Direct3D, restart Pro, change playback settings to both DV and Desktop, and set Audio to DV: I have the same problems as before, I press spacebar and the timeline just won’t play. Then, I unplug and plug back in the firewire cable. The first time I hit spacebar, only the desktop plays the timeline. I stop and replay the timeline again. Both the Desktop and DV play the timeline for about 1 sec (with audio!
  ) and then it abrupty stops.

  2. Why would my desktop have no words in the playback setting where my notebook either has “Direct3D” or “Microsoft GDI” displayed? I assume the Microsoft GDI is the default, so why wouldn’t my desktop have that displayed? Is there anything else you can think of to disable?

  Note: As a temporary work around, I am exporting to an uncompressed movie, sending the file to my desktop, and exporting to tape there. However, this is grossly time-comsuming and generally a pain.

  Your problem is a bit unusual…try this, put just a audio track on the timeline…no video. Will it play out to your camera?

  Nope, that doesn’t work either. It has the same problems as previously described.

  Try deleting Pro’s Preference file…hold down the Shift and CTRL keys while launching Pro, then reset your preferences. Failing that, I would try another firewire cable and camera.

  Hi Mike,
  Thanks for your help thus far. There cannot be anything wrong with the camera and cable as they are the same ones that I use on my desktop. I was also mistaken about that Direct3D business. My Desktop does have the little “using Direct3D” caption (although I swear it didn’t before!) and it works fine.

  I can’t get the “shift-ctrl” thing to work. Nothing happens when I hold these keys down on booting Pro.

  I’m fairly sure, now that you are also somewhat stumped, that its some sort of ASUS hardware issue. I guess I’ll live with it unless you have any last-minute revelations!
