Hello. I have been using Premier Pro 1.5 on my eMachines T6212 capturing miniDV tapes through my camcorder and now need to capture and record to Beta SP tapes. I will be purchasing a Sony UVW-1800 Betacam SP, a Sony PVM-1350 13″ Monitor and a Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro Audio Mixer. Will I be able to capture/record to the Betacam deck with my system now? Do I need to purchase a Decklink card for capture? What cables will I need to have these items work with my computer?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

My computer specs are at this site:
    https://www.e4me.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_T6212
Plus added 1 GB of RAM.

The main problem is that betacam VTRs do not have firewire so there is no two way video/audio and no machine control. Machine control on betacam uses an RS-422 connection. Take a look at https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/6cards.html to look at Adobe Certified Third Party Cards.

Also go to videoguys.com/vidcap.htm#firewire. Betacam video connections are composite, S-video, and component. The best quality available is component so if you want that, you will need a capture card with component inputs. Two cards with component inputs are ADS Pyro AV Link Studio API-757 for $640. and DataVideo DAC-1- for $660. I have not used either one of these or Decklink so maybe someone else can add their experience. I have a Sony PVW-2800 betacam at work that is similar to the 1800 but it is connected to a Media 100 system with a breakout box.

Audio out from betacam will use XLR connectors that can connect to your Mackie mixer. Be sure to look at machine control options or place the betacam deck so that it can be controlled from it’s front panel.

    Hi
The declink cards are good deals.. Most only take sdi in..the extream model takes analog in and out. Another consideration you should have is drive space and speed. Since the bit rates are alot higher then dv. as far as cables u’ll need 6 coax and at least 4 xlr audio’s thats the min…
    good luck

Thank you so much for your quick reply and help!
I’m going to go with the Decklink SP and the GRAID-SATA 320.

Hello again… I just learned that the DecklinkSP will not batch capture and that I have to manually capture. Is this true? If so, is there a capture card out there that will let me batch capture with the UVW-1800? I looked at the Certified third-party capture cards on the Adobe Premiere page, but they don’t tell me whether I can batch capture or not.

    Thanks again!

You should also consider the Convergent Design SD-Connect. It has component I/O and balanced analog XLR audio I/O to DV or uncompressed over firewire with Premiere. It also has RS-422 control including frame accurate insert/assemble editing and batch capturing.
We have a UVW-1800 here that we test with premiere on a regular basis and it works great. Currently, we are finishing up the development of uncompressed 8 bit or 10 bit video/audio over firewire with premiere. We demoed this at NAB.
The SD-Connect has 12 bit analog to digital and digital to analog video converters to achieve true 10 bit quality.
We also offer a 15 day free evaluation. Take a look at our website for more info:

Hmmm…the SD-Connect sounds great, but the price is a little too high for me. I was also recommended the Pyro A/V Link Converter. Does anyone use this product? Would I be able to batch capture using this?

Does the Pyro unit have RS422 deck control? If you want to batch capture (and for that matter, have ANY useful timecode on your footage captured from Beta SP), you simply have to have RS422 deck control.

The SD-Connect is a worthwhile investment. I have one and I batch capture from our UVW-1800 (as well as DVcam, DVCPRo, etc. via SDI, analog…you name it) all the time. I have several converters from several companies and this one is the best to date in my experience, both from a signal quality standpoint and a feature/price perspective.

The machine control is excellent, and based on my experience, by the time you get ProVTR or some other separate plugin to work beside one of the cheaper converters, you may end up investing enough extra time and frustration getting it dialed in to pay for the SD-Connect about 3 time over.
