    It was there before you bought it. You didn’t need to pay a penney for it. The standard DV AVI export uses the MainConcept codec.

    The Main Concept codec is available;
    File>Export>Movie>Settings>General>File Type= Microsoft AVI (not DV).
    Then Click Video and change the compressor to the Main Concept DV Codec 2.4.11

    Steve;
    My understanding is that Pro’s native MC codec use is for the creation of Preview files only. Exporting a DV.avi uses Microsoft DirecrShow codec.
    I have also done testing that shows a marked difference after 3 generations between both export options.

  • Mike,

    How do I get the latest Main Concept 2.4.16 DV Codec update into P. Pro to replace 2.4.11?

    Hmmm. Are you sure? I know that the MainConcept codec is used in Premiere Pro 1.5 as the default codec for editing. And it is not showing up as a special choice under Microsoft AVI. I understand that you have to pay for other MainConcept codecs, or upgrade, or whatever, but I was operating under the assumption that MainConcept is what the progeam uses for DV AVI.

    John,
    Just install the latest version, it will update Window’s Device Manager which is where all apps access codecs.

    Steve,
    I am never sure about anything, but if I was a bettin guy, I would give you 3;2 odds I am right. Pro uses the codec internally only. There is no mention of it for any export options unless the paid for version is installed..

    I just talked to Mark at MainConcept and he said that when you export using Microsoft DV AVI it does use the MainConcept encoder, even though there is not a place to specificially select MainConcept and the name still says Microsoft DV AVI.

    Whew! I thought so. But arguing with Mike Velte can be an extremely precatious place to be. 🙂

    Now that we know the answer, I can say that the reason I thought so was because of the speed of AVI exports after a render has already been done. I didn’t think there was enough time to change codecs. But I could not find proof. My codec checker was so confused it thought it was a Sony codec. I need a new checker I guess.
