Best way to customize a Mac Pro
I would love some advice on how to best customize a Mac Pro. It will be for After Effects, Premiere and occasionally DaVinci Resolve for color grading. But mostly After Effects. It will be for projects 5 minutes or less. We will deliver in 4K.
I’m looking at getting the Mac Pro. First off, I was planning on purchasing the extra RAM from a 3rd party like https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/owc/apple-mac-pro/2019 OWC since it is way cheaper.
Where should I put my extra money? I was thinking:
-12 Core
-32GB RAM ( but upgraded to 48 or 96?)
-Radeon Pro Vega 2 with 32GB of HBM2 MemoryShould I downgrade any of those options to the base option and put the money upgrading something else?

I think you’re on the right track. After Effects loves RAM, so I’d get as much as you can afford.

I’ve read contradicting articles one saying After Effects doesn’t even use the Graphics Card if you don’t use the ray trace. Is the graphics card that important?

Ae has been moving more and more processing onto the GPU with each release since the middle of 2016. Development is somewhat slow-going. There’s still a mix of CPU and GPU in the pipeline, so the amount of performance improvement you see totally depends on your workload.
I don’t think you’ll see a massive difference now, but hopefully someday!
Of course, Premiere (to an extent) and Resolve (even more so) can exploit a powerful GPU.

Check OWC for RAM upgrades.
The Apple tax is just a bit much for me.
I too am on the fence with the base config option.
I was going to wait for the W5700X option but I think it’s out of my budget range.
Def will get that Pegasus 8TB enclosure.
My day job is AE and Maya.
I use an HP Z240 with an 8GB Nvidia card for Maya. -
I pulled the trigger and made the purchase. I did go with the OWC RAM and saved a lot of money. Now I have to figure out how to install the RAM 🙂
