  • 3D Views … Where did my layer objects go?

Posted by Brian Forrester on December 5, 2019 at 5:55 pm

If I’m in “4 views” mode in my comp panel, I see a side bar with three thumbnail-frames (top, front, right), each of these shows my 3D layer objects (cam, text, etc). Next to the thumbnails is a large preview frame labeled “top.”

There is nothing in larger Top view, despite the smaller-thumbnail-Top-view showing the objects.

Anybody have any idea why this is and how to make it so objects show up in the larger preview frame?

Nothing in the After Effects Classic 3D renderer has any depth, so when you look from the top view, the text is infinitely thin and can’t be seen. (This is sometimes called “2.5D” — 2D objects positioned in 3D space.)

Imagine your Ae layers are like a sheets of paper — you can see it when it’s facing the camera, but when you look at the top or the side, it’s too thin to see.

… Ok, I figured it out. I somehow hit the “Toggle Math Path and Shape Visibility” button.

I’m so sorry, Brian, I completely misunderstood your question! Glad you figured it out.

There’s a keyboard shortcut for that toggle to show/hide layer controls, too — it’s Ctrl+Shift+H (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+H (macOS). It only affects the active viewer.
