Well you can do it with stroke; are you looking for video or print?
You need plenty of layers set to multiply/color/burn…etc in order to achieve it properly. Don’t forget your layer with a feathered mask (showing the edges only) with a gaussian blur on it — and some color burning gradients. It will take some patience — if you’re looking to do it with print I’d use some sort of 3d software and just lay out some sweep nurbs (c4d…) — I believe i ran across a tutorial on that sort of thing in an issue of COMPUTER ARTS PROJECTS. It was last summer and it showed how to do it in maya using multi-pass techniques. You can’t just ‘make’ it; it is going to be a ton of layers and effects with different blends — but it’ll look hot in the end.
