How do I do this?? Does anyone have good advice??
Are they masking in between comps? Are they using a master comp with several pre-comps and just overlaying them with one camera in 3d space?

Either or both – all depending on the needs of that particular effect and how they’re working on that project.

Most of this is pretty basic stuff. However, I’d suggest spending some time watching tutorials at Video CoPilot
and in particular with their SureTarget 2.
