Loading media of updated project takes forever on new Macbook Pro
I haven’t found any reference to this problem.
I’ve been working on a feature documentary film for a couple of years (a long project with vast materials). All the media resides on an external USB 3 HD, all converted to Prores Proxy, with a total side of around 5tb. I have been working for a long time on Premiere 2019 , on an alder Macbook Pro 2014. The premiere project file itself is quite massive at around 500mb. I had been reluctant to update because as we all know it’s best not to do it amidst a project. But recently the old computer became impossible to work with due to age and I got one of the new Macbook Pro (14” base model). So I was forced to upgrade Premiere, since I couldn’t find an installer for 2019. Now after the project was updated, when it opens on this new setup, it takes a reeeeeally long time to go through the loading process (when all the file names appear on the lower side of the screen with all the names flashing by), at least 4 times longer than it used to take on the old Mac, which is pretty crazy. I am running the latest MacOS (12.13.1), and I have trying this whole update both to 2021 and to 2022. So I’m trying to figure out what is causing this.
– The USB C –> USB 3.0 adapter? I don’t think so, since when it does load the media plays fine (I am using the ubiquitous Xcellon 6-in-1 USB Type-C Hub with Power Delivery bought at BH).
– The fact that the project is just too huge and updated from older versions somehow causes an issue?
– Maybe the fact that all the Renders, and Peak files are on the external hard drive? (Maybe I should re-make these peak media cache files so they are fresh on this new project??)

do you have any stabilized footage in there? because that data gets stored in the project file itself. i’d render that part out. plus building peak files is highly sensitive to a slow connection. that should usually be done on a fast nvme or something equivalent that can handle usb 3.2 gen 2 speeds. also, if you’re playing back the footage externally, you should do a disk speed test to see if there is a bottleneck.

Well, thank you for the response, but it’s really none of that. The issue I am talking about is simply that the Media Loading process, which happens right after a project finished opening, is taking a very long time to happen. As far as disk speed, I have run tests, it’s unfortunately not that.

Thank you! The problem with that link is that it only has the base initial version of each software. So, that is v13.0.0, and I was actually at 13.1.5 Do you by any chance know of any way to update to 13.1.5 from that version on an M1. Through the Creative Cloud interface it doesn’t seem possible. It simply stopped connecting to the internet when I installed this 2019 version the other day, I wish I could find something like the Combo updates that used to exist for MacOS and the old Final Cuts.

I have struggled with one project with new PP not as big but slow to load and sometimes even failed.
One thing to try is open a new project (empty) then import the old project by using import function and point to old project file and select the “entire project” option on the popup.

Hi Mark, thank you for the feedback and the suggestion.
If it were not such a large project full of possibilities for error in the conversion for this profoundly changed new version of the program, I would try doing that. Subtitles for instance are an issue: the films footage is in different languages and I need to edit with the subtitles on top and these newer versions are also completely changed in the way the deal with subtitles. So, for all these reasons I’m going to hold off using the new Premiere Pro. The main one is the absurdly slow loading speed.
I was able to install the older 2020 version of PPro which seems to be the last one that does not have this architectural change in the media loading. On the same M1 Pro Macbook Pro it loads the project at normal speed. The 2022 seems to be completely impractical for large updated projects.
I would still love to understand why this is.
