  Field question…

  Got a question on fields. I need to know how to deal with fields and full frame, and when I should use what where. Especially when rendering. Might someone point me to the correct article or tutorial?

  There should be an article in the Adobe Support database. Other than that …

  – rendering fields or frames is an aesthetic decision when rendering for TV/DVD.
  – however, if you render fields, make sure that you render in the correct field order for whatever hardware is sending the image from computer to tape. For example, DV-NTSC is lower field first.
  – if you plan to animate the position, rotation, scale of a clip or otherwise distort that clip in AE, you must make sure the fields are separated on import, or re-interpret the clip after importing. (file>interpret footage>main)
  – to check if you’ve interpreted the field order correctly, alt-double-click on the clip in the project window, then step through the clip using the pageUp or PageDn keys. When stepping in one direction, the action should move in one direction. If it moves back and forth, you’ve interpreted the field order incorrectly. Reinterpret the clip using the other field order.
  – FCP and other apps refer to field order as “field dominance”. This is wrong. Field Dominance refers to the place where NLEs make cuts: on the upper field or lower field. Field order refers to the field in a digital frame (containing two fields) that comes first in the action.
  – if you place a 720×480 clip in a 720×486 comp, move it up one pixel so there are 2 pixels above, 4 below, not 3 above, 3 below. If you placed it so 3 pixels are above/below, you’d reverse the field order of the clip. (if was interlaced)
  – similarly, you can reverse the field order of a 720×480 clip in a 720×480 comp by moving it up or down one pixel. Sometimes you need to do that.
