SD DVD to HD conversion question (help me to verify my answer)
I have a question I believe I already know the answer too, but I just wanted to verify, because maybe I’m out of the loop on something.
Back in the late 90s, early 2000s, I worked for a successful rock band, and in the early 2000s we put out a DVD that featured their professional music videos, as well as behind the scenes footage, which was shot on 8mm and VHS. It was all edited together in a post production facility, and then manufactured onto DVDs and sold in stores.
Fast forward to today, and the band wants to stream this on different platforms. The problem is, they lost the master tape that everything was edited onto, and all they have now is the DVD that was sold in stores. They also want this in HD. So the video would have to be pulled off the DVD first, and then that would be used as the “master” going forward.
The lack of quality is going to be pretty noticeable, right? And you can’t make something HD that was originally shot in VHS and 8mm. It’s like you can’t polish a turd, right? I think it will kind of end up looking like a bootleg. Am I correct in thinking this is just not gonna work at all?
I edit on Final Cut Pro X right now, just as an FYI.
