I have an HP StorageWorks LTO-5 tape deck and have been using BRU PE 3.1 on our old Mac 10.6.8 server for about 6 months without issues. A few months ago, I started having failures during backup that would report that the tape was full and to insert a new tape.

Putting in a new tape would make it continue briefly, but frequently would prompt for another tape shortly after – anywhere from 20 seconds to 2 hours. I managed to get a video clip of what the front of the tape deck looks like when it’s having this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef1UvMv7tSs

I’ve tried reinstalling BRU, connecting to a different point, powering the tape deck with a different enclosure, and ran diagnostics on the deck with HP software – everything reports back fine, but it continues to fail backups at varying lengths of time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am unable to upgrade to a newer OS due to our system here, and BRU 3.1 was the version I had the most success with.

    Thanks!

I’ve seen this happen back when we used Bru as our LTO backup solution. We still do, but infrequently now.

Anyway, here are the reasons I have found this to happen.

Tape drive loses connection to computer. For eg, while backup was on, if someone suddenly decided to tidy up the desk, and shook the SAS cable enough, the backup would stop and Bru would ask for another tape. Solution, start over.

Data source drive has errors, or loses connection to computer while backup is on. Does this happen with a specific drive or set of data? Solution, check source drive with disk utility. If this is a network source, try backup from a local direct-attached source.

Tape head needs cleaning. This one is least likely as if the head needs cleaning, the light would come on. But run the head cleaner tape once anyway.

There used to be some versions of Bru which this happened more frequently. Can’t remember what that was, but the version that we ran last was BRU PE 3.2.6.80 and I don’t recall seeing this with that last version. Its still available for download at the tolisgroup site.
