  • Matching a camera zoom in After Effects

Hey all, I’m trying to match some 2D vector graphics to a zoom that was done in camera (an actual camera, not the AE camera), and I’m not getting optimal results so far, and I’m honestly not sure the best way to implement. Should I create a camera and make the 2d graphics into 3d layers? Can I capture zoom data with any of the motion tracking tools? Or should I find some points to track and try to use scaling data to resize the vectors? Has anyone done this who can recommend a good way to match the movement from a zoom, rather than a track or other camera movement? Thanks!

MochaAE which is included in After Effects might be worth a try. It’s a planar tracker and generally performs better (in my opinion) with these kind of things. AE also includes a camera tracker which recreates a 3D camera – although often the results are difficult to work with. There’s also the original motion tracking that can capture scaling.

Sometimes you just can’t get a good track. Depending on the shot and the length of it, you could at a pinch, take a still frame of the shot and split it into background and foreground layers, position them within 3D space and use an AE camera. There’s lots of work needed to add subtle movement and grain etc…, but sometimes this is still easier than trying to fix a wobbly track.

So I found two solid track points and tracked scale, and that seemed to do the trick. Not sure if that would work in all cases, but it worked for this instance.
