Software for Interactive
Hello all,
Before I appear to being ignorant, It wasn’t always the case. I created over a hundred productions in the following software;
Macromedia Director, Flash, FCP, Encore, Premiere, DVD Studio Pro, Dream Weaver etc. etc, ectI only mention this because I am contemplating a production after a 15 year hiatus and I don’t have a clue what people are using now.
I want to produce a display for a museum and I envision a 4k, 52 inch touch screen playing video in portrait mode. The user will select different video presentations.
This would be super easy to do in 2005 with DVD Studio Pro or Director on a 720×486 screen but which software to use? Will Adobe Animate do this? Adobe Captivate?
I’ll worry about specing the monitor and computer later.
Ughhh will i need a beast of a computer to author the presentation?

I would use Unity. https://unity.com It has a very good video player built-in and I have used it for numerous museum interactives. Like Director and Flash, it has an authoring gui similar to premiere/after effects. While originally focused on 3d games, they have added some very good 2d canvas layout tools. I like to design UIs in After Effects and then export the components to Unity to add the interactivity.

I hope I don’t do any complex projects so the simpler the better – Click one of three buttons and play a video.

+1 here for Intuiface. We’ve used it for several clients for interactive kiosk type things. Super easy to use and deploy on low-cost hardware.

Any reason I should but a kiosk through a museum display company instead of going throug B&H and just but a large touch screen monitor and mount?

I haven’t had experience with anything more specialty like that, so I can’t say.
For our purposes, we’ve just purchased large touch screens (Elo brand) from B&H and ran the Intuiface experience with a chromebox. We also ran the same experience on an iPad for a smaller kiosk version.

HTML5. Basically you’re going to create a web page and deliver this via a dedicated “digital signage” media player. You could use any computer, or even an Apple Pi board, and any web development environment that handles video, but using a purpose-built media player like a Brightsign (currently the market leader) is far simpler and more robust. Most come with development software that will allow you to create simple pages and interactivity without having to use a third-party HTML development tool.
If you need more than HTML5, you’re most likely looking at Unity.

FYI, Intuiface is an HTML5 development environment and is compatible with Brightsign and other HTML5 based media players. However, what you describe can likely be done using only the Brightsign provided authoring tools.

The Brightsign software is pretty simple and will probably be sufficient for what you describe.
