  Masking edge of color

  I am not all that great with after effects, and I’m wondering how, if possible, I can create a mask that follows the edge of a specified color range (forgive me if I didn’t phrase this as best as I could). for example I have a solid that has an audio spectrum effect and I would like the mask to move around the edge of it.
