  • How to remove a thick-wire from shot?

Posted by Tom on December 23, 2016 at 8:45 pm

In this case, the “wire” removal is a thick chain.
See shot here ( BLUE “Download File” to see P1430042_1.mov) :
    https://expirebox.com/download/c8eb837045ab58a474494162f4d1cfe3.html

The chain that is holding up the climber needs to be cleanly removed.
Everything I tried leaves artifacts and just ends up not looking real and clean.

I’m looking for pointers from the AE experts here as I have tried these two separately and together, no luck.
    CC Simple wire removal
    Clone stamp

I’ve tracked it and tried at cut a clean plate (from this footage) and use it as a proxy on top of the chain
and roto’d out the climber – still looks horrible ☹

    Advice ?

    Thanks in advance,

    TH

    — Hi Tom — this might be worth a try if you havent already given it a go…. possibly its an answer .. not sure…

I once did a tricky shot, with some similarities, on Flint where there is a ‘buy and sell’ function

…….you load 3 clips – foreground, matte and background and you can paint the matte frame by frame and it reveals the bottom clip through the top clip……

Whats good about this is that the bottom clip can be the same as the top clip only you slip it a frame or two so that it you ‘paint out’ things with the same clip .

You can do this in a number of passes as well so that if a bit isnt quite right the first time round you can render and get it on a second pass……..the trick is to be fairly accurate with the matting, use a soft edge and dont slip the fill too much or you will see it.

——– an AE version of this might be worth a try ( ? ) though not sure if the camera move is too much for this —

It’s a near perfect job for the Mocha Insert/Remove tool.

    Hey Chris,

Thank so much for your quick reply & suggestion – you exactly see the issue @ hand.

I started leaning in the frame-by-frame paint but didn’t think of it in your terms; I believe that’s a great approach.

    Take care,

    Tom

    1. 3d camera track the shot
    2. find a suitable target and place a solid. make sure it covers the chain (don’t scale it, use solid settings for it)

    3. precomp the solid->leave all attributes- call it “CleanPlate” put the texture inside (clean the some in Photoshop)

    4. roughly mask the precomp with some feather, don’t worry about a bit of overlap with the guy just don’t make it too big

    5. duplicate the footage, mask the parts of the guy that are over the cleanplate

    you can do it better
