Create glowing, sharp zap coming out of a futuristic gun?
Hi there, I’m gonna go real succinct with this one. Can anybuddy share me some tips on how to create a futuristic gun zapping fx? I’ve already a fake sophisticated gun on my actor’s hands but how can I do a glowing, sharp zap coming out of the gun? If possible, I just wanna stick to the pre-existing fx inside my AE CC 2014 rather than having to install 3rd party plugins be it free or paid. For the zapping sound fx, I’ll take care of it. TY

You could try combining the Beam and Glow effects, with maybe some particles from CC Particle World. It’s hard to know exactly what you are going for.
If you are willing to use a free 3rd party plugin, Andrew Kramer’s Saber plugin sounds perfect for the job.

AE only – like it’s been suggested, use the beam effect with glow, work at 32 bit color depth. Add a displacement/distortion using the ripple effect or a distortion map, at the tip of the barrel to add realism. A “bullet trail” may be useful to show the heat left behind by the beam.
