  • More Problems with VP 18

I STILL am having a number of issues with Vegas Pro 18, mainly that it is so SLOW!! I tested it against Vegas Pro 17, and it is significantly slower in just about every category. Yes, I DID uninstall/reinstall VP 18 a number of times, each with the same results, AND my graphics card is disabled in both Vegas versions.

    1) Since I had no visible render progress box in VP 18, Steve Rhoden suggested that I install SeMW extensions. I did so, and I now see a render box when rendering and this extension does not appear to negatively affect VP 18’s operations.

    2) Creating video proxies: a 31 second clip took 55 seconds in VP 17 and a whopping 4 minutes, 44 seconds in VP 18—UNACCEPTABLE!!

    3) Although my system uses VP more efficiently with my graphics card disabled, in VP 17 I have three choices in Preferences-File I/O Hardware Decoder to use: Intel QSV, AMD UVD, or NVIDIA NVDEC; I only have Auto (OFF) or Off options in VP 18. Evidently VP 18 is NOT recognizing my graphics card!

    4) VP 18 is supposed to save preferences. When I reinstalled VP 18 earlier today and reloaded my saved preferences, it appeared only to save the editing screen background color and my window layouts. None of my customized toolbars appeared and I manually had to search for and refresh my non-Magix Audio VST plugins (Waves and New Blue). This was a great disappointment, too!

    5) An anomaly with VP 17, as well…EVERY time I run VP 17 I have to reregister and reactivate the software before it loads!! A quick check in my Magix online account shows that the software IS activated and registered! What’s going on??!!

    Here are my PC specs:

    – Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit

    – Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz

    – 32721 MB RAM

Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 5800 Series (1024 MB)

Grant it, I have an older PC but it still works well for me (sans VP 18). So should I just use VP 17 to create the proxies and then edit in VP 18? Maybe just a new graphics card will solve the problem? Or perhaps I need a new, state-of-the-art PC to allow VP 18 to recognize my system’s full potential? What do you think?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Thank you in advance.

My newly replaced PC looks similar to yours and since VP17 and VP18 were giving me so much trouble I built another one recently with much better specs…fresh install of windows 10 and VP18…didn’t help at all.

Sent a ticket into Magix “support” over a week ago and yesterday they sent me a survey asking me to give them a high score…I didn’t give them a high score to say the least.

I hope someone here can help you (and me) by coming up with a fix.

Firstly, I don’t work for Magix, nor am I running VP18, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I have, however, been using Vegas Pro commercially for a very long time and thought I would share some tips which should help you to decide on what is going on here.

Vegas uses the GPU/s in one of four ways.

    1. Dynamic RAM preview
    2. Rendering to the preview window
    3. Accelerated processing in most of the plugins
    4. Final rendering.

From what I can tell, they are supposed to be independent, however my experience has been that there is clashes, so to get a stable system, I have had to decide on what has priority ie. maximum speed gain by turning off all but one of the GPU options above. In my system I have had to

    – turn off 1. (by setting the value to 0)
    – set one of my non-default GPUs up the processor for the render preview window or when I only had one GPU, set it to NONE.
    – turned ON GPU rendering in all of my plugins.
    – Used only the CPU for rendering in the final renders. (when I only had one GPU) but have recently used the nVidia accelerated options as it uses a default GPU.

Vegas originally performed best on AMD cards but this is no longer the case, based on the performance figures that others have published.

I notice that you have a relatively old AMD graphics card and this could well be an issue with later versions of Vegas. I suspect that this is what Magix tech support will suggest as a first step to fix this problem. Investing in a newer GPU is not wasted money as most modern applications will benefit from the extra computing power.

There is some useful user information in this post:

Hope this helps you to get back up to speed.

Per Magix’s instructions, I deleted an .ini file and reinstalled VP 17 Pro, and this eliminated the re-registration anomaly when loading.

With respect to VP 18 Pro and my particular hardware setup, Magix hinted that a 1660 card may help me. So I have had my eye on the ASUS GeForce GTX 1660 Super Overclocked 6GB Dual-fan EVO Edition VR Ready HDMI DisplayPort DVI Graphics Card (DUAL-GTX1660S-O6G-EVO) on Newegg (currently $10 off) for $239. This has the outputs I need (a DVI and an HDMI port). My research shows that the “Super” version has the most bang for the buck!

So what do you who are in the know think/suggest/advise? I otherwise do not yet need to upgrade my PC and feel that if this is a wise move I should act upon it and at least get several more years use out of my current PC that works fine on everything else that I run.

    Thanks in advance!
