  Premiere Proxy vs Transcode?

  Hi all,

  Longtime Avid editor here who was real accustomed to the proxy workflow. Been using Premiere (new jobs, new skills right?) the last few years and now using it for a home project where I’m actually handling media creation.

  I have some gnarly 1080p 240fps H.265 (HVEC) GoPro files. Just for fun I brought a few into Premiere, and as expected even my iMac Pro just went “nope” trying to playback even at 1/8th.

  So I can obviously create proxies, but since this is destined for the web and and all 1080p, I would rather do some batch encoding up front so figured transcodes would be a good option. But no matter what I try (DNxHD, ProRes 422, GoPro Cineform etc) it cuts the footage frame rate from 240fps to 60fps. I did some googling and found that Media Encoder can no longer go above 60fps….

  (sidenote: Really, Adobe? I get export not needing more than 60fps, but on ingest? Also don’t call it “Match Source” then)

  So now I’m curious: Do I actually have a transcode option with Adobe to maintain the 240fps (I would like to speedramp it while editing), or am I forced to go with proxies and a re-link?

  If I can transcode, what am I missing here?

  If anyone is wondering the same thing, I finally found the best workaround to be interpreting the H.265s down to 24fps (or whatever desired frame rate is) and then making proxies of those interpreted files. Only way I see to transcode workflow would still be bringing the H.265s into Premiere, interpreting, and then just exporting as whatever final format you want.
