  • Teranex or AI software for Component Video SD to HD upscaling

    Hello,

Need a little help (as most of us who post do).

My company is upscaling old pool tournament videos from our archive of Betacam SP tapes. The Betacam players are component output. We capture on an AJA card to our Mac at 480i. I have been using After Effects to upscale from SD to 720p29.97 using the “Detail-preserving upscale”. It seemed ok, but after doing some research, it seemed that we should just invest in a Teranex. We were just about to order one (with a compnent to SDI converter) when I happened upon AI-based software – specifically, Topaz Lab’s Video Enhance AI. I’ve done tests with it and while it takes a long time to render, it really cleans up the jaggedies of diagonal lines and spheres, as well as lettering… Mid to far -shot faces don’t really show much difference, though…

How does the Teranex compare to AI software, aside from the real-time conversion… I feel that the AI software will only get better… but perhaps the Teranex still blows it away??

Anyone have experience with these two opposing methods or care to weigh in?

    Thank you!!

    Well… Answering my own post.

Teranex AV. Very natural upscales and fast, as in real-time. Plus, with the ability to do some color correction real-time. And, once you get the peripherals (play card/capture card) FINALLY to play nice, it’s easy to use.
