  • Need faster way to loop playback of a clip segment followed by same clip segment(reversed)

Posted by Jordan Brady on July 21, 2020 at 10:53 am

    Hi,

I frequently cut out a segment of a clip so I can play the aforementioned segment followed by a reverse of that same segment – all on a loop.
To clarify, it looks like this – [segment1>segment1(REVERSED)]. I play those two segments on a loop to see how it looks. Then I’ll adjust the start/end points as needed.

But the way I do it is to cut out the segment, paste it on the timeline twice, then reverse the second one, and set the loop region. My problem is this method takes too many clicks/keystrokes. Is there a faster way to achieve this?

    Thanks

    Hi Jordan

You may want to try this option and see it it works better for you.

Make sure that only the video track is selected. Right click on the video event. Select Insert/Remove Envelope . Click on Velocity. A line will appear. Double left click on line to create points as in picture below. Points can be set anywhere to create the desired effect.

With left mouse button, drag point to minus 100%. That will reverse your video at said point.

Not sure if it’s faster than your other method, but one never knows…

    Cheers !

    Hi Jordan

That did not answer your question at all. I had 2 other forums open at the time and someone had a similar question to yours. I replied to the wrong query.

    Sorry about that.

    Cheers !

    Hi Francois,

No worries. Ideally I’d like to be able to set a loop region on the main clip, then have it playback a forward+reverse of that region, with the ability to adjust start and end points. Once I’ve decided on the exact start/end points, I can then cut it out as a subclip on the timeline.

    Yes exactly! Thank you.

Should I request a trial for these scripts through the website?

“Should I request a trial for these scripts through the website?”

No. It will be part of the HO Free Tools library. I’ll try to upload it tomorrow and will post back when when you can download it.

    Awesome, thank you.

I’m also interested in some of the scripts I saw on the site – Deshaker, Kwikpreview and Slowmotion. Would these be part of the free tools library you’re uploading or are they separate?

Just uploaded ForwardReverse to the Free Tools Library at https://tools4vegas.com/library/.

No, they are part of the main HOS package which is a paid app. There is a 30 day free trial, plus there is an option for a Free license which includes some of the more basic scripts and toolbars.

Let me know if there are problems with ForwardReverse.

    Hi Wayne,

I just tried it – it works great, thanks again. However, it could use a bit of improvement.

Firstly, when it creates the new track with the 2 subclips, it’d be nice if the loop region automatically encompassed both subclips instead of just the original, so that you can play it immediately. Not a big deal though.

More importantly, when I trim/expand the subclip’s end/start points, I then need to copy it, delete the reversed clip, then paste, and set to reverse. Alternatively, I can just play with the loop region on the original track to where I need it, then run the script again – but this causes an overlap of the subclips on the secondary track, as it’ll place them overtop of each other.

Using the subclips to trim/expand is preferable, since it shows you on the preview window exactly where you are expanding/trimming to, whereas fiddling with the loop region I find is less efficient.

Anyhow, ideally it would be able to let you adjust the newly created subclip to your liking, run the script again, and it replace the old two clips with the adjusted clips. Or at least places them adjacent to eachother so they don’t overlap. Come to think it, adjacent is better since then you can compare the edits easily.

Lastly, thanks for letting me know about the other tools I was interested in. Would you be able to send me a trial license here for those 3 scripts I mentioned in my previous post? Or should I send an email to the address on the website?

    HI Jordan,

“However, it could use a bit of improvement.” Not surprising.–most everything can.

I’ve made a couple of changes and uploaded a new version for you to download and try again. The selection loop now encloses both events and more importantly, it removes the previous events and subclips if you decide to change the selection length and “start over”.

Once you’re happy with the two subclips, you will still need to manually add them (or just the reverse subclip) back to the your original track and adjust the original event.
