  • Mograph Scale to Edge – Animation

I’m working on animating the rotation of an atom type object made out of clones of edges and nodes. The object they are connected to is a low poly sphere. The edges (made up of cylinders) have ‘Scale to Edge’ switched on but having this switched on makes the cylinders grow too far during rotation thus creating a spikey ball. I have to rotate the poly sphere a certain way and only on 1 axis, for the problem not to occur.

This is how i need it to look throughout the animation

No matter how i grouped or stacked my objects, the issue was less or more but always there. How do i stop this please?

a quickie test here doesn’t do anything like that, you might have to upload your scenefile so we can see what it’s doing

That file is working for me. No ‘offshoots’ like in your example image. I’m using R21 though and I see it was created in R21 but last saved from 22… maybe it’s something to do with 22?

Wierd that. No, i’ve tried it in R21 and S22. The issue only occurs when i rotate along the X & Z axis. A few of my colleagues have had a go and the same thing happens. They’re on R21.

Wow, definitely working for me… Plugins maybe?

Tried it with and without Corona Renderer. Those are the only ones we have installed.

very weird. I don’t have Corona (used the beta – very nice renderer) but renderers shouldn’t do that.
Try turning all your Cloners from Multi-Instance to Instance

interesting, if I export (the cylinders) to alembic some of the cylinders are out of place in frame 0 but are correct after that. If I export to fbx they are all correct except the sphere (won’t do deforms).
None of that may matter since you are getting different results.

I had tried to rotate the whole thing as a group aswell, but it was like the sphere couldn’t catch up with the rest of cylinders and nodes. They were all out of sync, even after delaying all my key frames and starting from scratch. It even did the thing that you mention about the sphere not deforming in one senario.

I’ll give the Instance thing a bash.

    Cheers
