    I’m creating the effect where text is projected onto the surface of a face and then animates across the facial contours. I took the photo of the face and made it greyscale and adjusted the contrast of it to use as the displacement map for the original photo. When I take the text (an illustrator cs logo) and apply the dirplacemnt map to the logo it displaces fine. My issue is when I animate the posiiton of the text across the surface of the face, the displacing does not update. What do I need to do to show the updated displacment? Thanks!

    Well think about AE’s default rendering order. Masks, then effects, then transforms, then blend modes. What I suggest is doing the animation of the position of the logo in a precomp, then displacing that precomp.

    yes it will work in a precomp…
    another problem is that the text borders look very noise if i use the displacement map… is there any alternative to get a clearer displacement?

    instead of displacement map effect, try using the effect called caustics. You can soften the edges in that, and it does some really nice stuff, but it’s a lot more complex than the displacement map effect.
