I wish I could find an example of what I’m aiming for, but hopefully a description will do.
I’m trying to simulate the effect of a retinal disease in which the vision becomes increasingly restricted (i.e. “tunnel vision”). But rather than simply narrowing, it starts with a sort of grungy noise at the edges and builds toward the center, almost like mold in a petri dish. I’m trying to play around with fractal noise and and animated mask, but so far it’s not looking right. Thanks in advance for any pointers. I’ll try to find some examples in the meantime.

Create a black (or grey) solid. Add a circular mask. Feather it some.
Apply Roughen Edges. Adjust settings as needed.
    Animate the mask expansion.
    Done!

Well, not done, but much closer to done. 🙂

That gives me an excellent starting point. I tried compositing that with a solid fractal noise layer using the same animated mask and I think it’s about there. Thanks, Michael!
