Is this a custom dissolve…What is this and how do you do it?
I’m sure many of you have seen this video of Mrs. Doubtfire cut to a horror film: Doubtfire I’m trying to find out how to do the effect or is it a dissolve? where part of the video/clip goes inverted to a negative film appearance. What is this called and how do you do it? I don’t want the entire clip to be inverted (but good to know too just in case) but how would you go about doing just part of it like in this video? Is this even an AE effect?
I use Media Composer 5.5 and have access to Symphony 6 as well if that helps to answer with work flow steps. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

try the “invert” effect and see if that gets you where you want.

Hey George,
Thanks for the reply but wouldn’t the “invert” effect just be applied to the entire clip vs. just a specific part of the clip I want? Or is there a setting or transition feature that will let me invert whichever section of the clip I want inverted?
As you can see in the video the inverted effect is done to only the tail end of the clip which makes me think it could be a custom dissolve/transition but I’m not 100% sure. That’s the only way I can think of that would enable to get only the tail end of the clip inverted but I have no idea if that’s what this person did to achieve this effect or if it’s something different. Either way I don’t know how to do it and hopefully someone could point me in the right direction.

ya, just cut the clip where you want the effect to start so that its a separate clip and add the invert effect.

Ok so then I would just place an “add edit” where I want the invert to start on the clip?

This is an After Effects forum. I don’t know how your other software works. But basically you should have two separate clips. You should make a cut where you want the effect to start and on the second clip add the invert effect.

I know that but figured maybe you or someone else has worked with Media Composer before. So can you make the cut in After Effects and then apply the invert? Or am I just better off importing the exact piece of the clip I want inverted from my editing software into AE, make the effect and then re-import back into my software and doing it that way?
I’ve never used AE before so I don’t really know what it can and can’t do, however, for this project I’m doing I’ll finally be using it.

Would I need to split the clip in AE doing ctrl + shift + D and then apply the invert effect? If so, then what would I do after that? or is that all?
