This effect looks like it was done using the über-cheesy Alien Skin Eye Candy plug-ins or something of equally, er, um, full cheddary goodness.

    Best regards,

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

my guess is this was some hugely expensive “in camera” trails effect. With todays modern plugins, you would need these all shot on green screen. And then apply any number of trails effects, boris continuum complete has a decent one. Then its up to artistic taste as to what to apply ON TOP of the trails effects.
It looks like a kind of find edges\emboss effect and I would finish is off by applying “reel smart motion blur pro” to the whole thing. That will blur the images together in a ‘smoother way’
It can take a lot of effort to create, as Ron says, a CHEESY effect.

Good luck, its always fun. to me, to try and duplicate something created by a tool that probably does not
    exist any more…

My guess based on Michael’s nose in that video is that this was done on the legendary Ampex ADO or maybe the Abekas… Until last week, we had a Pinancle Alladin that imitated this effect quite well. It finally went down with a bad power supply, but may yet crawl off the old “bring out your dead” cart, a la Monty Python. And it may just have been donwe with camea into a high-rez monitor feeding back, with some edge keying applied.

What project are you doing next, bringing back the old ZZTOPP solarization with stutter-shutter look ? 🙂

If you have video shot against a black background because you were trying to duplicate the video (depending on the motion in it) you might be able to get away with applying an Echo effect, or something similar, and playing with the parameters (like number of echoes, for example).

I’m always saying that the one thing missing from present day digital editing is a real time joystick controlled effects box like the ADO or the Abekas. Our old ADO is rotting away in a landfill somewhere, but I still have the 5 1/4″ floppy discs.

This can be done easily using one of the presets of the Fairlight Video Synthesizer. This was an awesome digital effects box made and sold by an Australian company back in the 1980’s.

I bought one and wore it out! The company went out of business years ago and I haven’t been able to find anyone who can fix mine. I won’t throw it out, though- I’ll keep looking for a repair facility.

I used that same effect in music videos in 1987. It’s done with a push of a button on the Fairlight.
